What Is Stress?
Stress is the body and mind's natural response to any pressure that disrupts its normal balance. It occurs when our perception of events doesn't meet our expectations and we are unable to manage our reaction.

If we can manage the stress within a short period of time, this eustress can be very beneficial to us. Eustress is a positive form of stress that can motivate and energize individuals to achieve their goals. Other benefits of stress include the beating of our heart, increased focus, improved immune function, and enhanced performance under pressure.

On the other hand, distress, or chronic, long-term stress, can have negative effects on physical and mental health. Because stress is chemically-mediated, it affects every system and part of your body. The longer the stress goes on without being taken care of, the worse your health becomes. You will notice its negative effects first on the weakest systems of your body. It can lead to headaches, fatigue, and difficulty sleeping, as well as anxiety and depression. Long-term stress can also increase the risk of developing chronic health conditions such as heart disease, respiratory conditions, digestive issues, and skin maladies.

Stress has become the number one malady of our time. The constant pressure associated with living in the fast-paced world has created an environment where nearly everyone is suffering from excessive stress. This upsets our body’s normal balance. I read recently that stress is implicated in about 85% of all illnesses, and where it’s not the cause of an illness, it makes any health challenge worse. However, we can have a direct positive effect on this negative stress by learning how to manage it, by self-regulation.

“It's just stress” is a phrase often used to dismiss an emotional outburst, forgetfulness, headache, pain, or illness.
